it has a poor resistance to corrosion. It can easily rust
unless it is given some kind of protective coating.
A protective pre-treatment called phosphating gives
carbon steel corrosion-resistant properties. The
process involves applying layers of phosphate crystals that
bond tightly to the steel, which causes the steel surface
to integrate itself as part of a highly insoluble film that
inhibits corrosion. The highly porous film allows additional
materials (such as paint) to seep into the phosphate coating
and become mechanically interlocked after drying.
The main types of phosphate coatings are manganese, iron
and zinc. For wire partitioning,
iron phosphates are typically used as a base for further
coatings. It's usually applied by immersion or by spraying.

more resistance to rust than bare degreased steel, and 50%
better adhesion to paint. The increased paint adhesion reduces
the damage caused by bumps and handling, preventing the paint
from blistering, chipping or flaking after it is baked.
