Low Carbon Steel and Wire Partitions

Welded steel mesh partitions offer a means to quickly section and secure large areas with rigid fencing. To provide this kind of security and protection, low-carbon steel is used in their manufacture because of its tensile strength and impact resistance.

In applications where rigidity is a limiting factor in design, like with wire partitions, low-carbon steel performs much better than other type of steels. It produces a sturdy barrier that is evenly strengthed throughout its frame.

What is Low-Carbon Steel?

Carbon steel is formed when iron and carbon is combined. Carbon is used as the alloying element and the primary hardening agent. The higher the percentage of carbon in the steel, the greater its hardness and tensile strength. However, increasing the carbon content decreases steel's weld ability and ductility. Low-carbon steel has a carbon content of about 0.30 weight percent.

Used extensively as a general all-purpose steel, low-carbon steel mesh partitions are tough,
yet easier and less expensive to produce than other steels.

Characteristics of Low-Carbon Steel

Low-carbon steel mesh partitions is an excellent structural material. With a high degree of ductility, it is a very forgiving material. It doesn't harden appreciably when welded, and can easily be worked using almost any conventional welding method with little risk of cracking. The welds often match or exceed the base metal in strength.

Carbon steel will yield a little to alleviate stress concentrations due to holes, notches, and other geometric stress risers. Its tensile strength can be improved by adding trace amounts of niobium. But it can take a lot of abuse without catastrophic failure.

Low-carbon steel mesh partitions has the same properties as iron but is softer and easier to form. But like iron, it has a low resistance to corrosion, which may limit its applications. Special coatings such as phosphating can be applied to increase its suitability and durability.
