United States Armed Forces

Alternative References: U.S. Army - U.S. Military

The U.S. Armed Forces is the military service of the United States and is structured into five active-duty branches: Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force and the Coast Guard. With approximately 3 million personnel, the all-volunteer U.S. military is the second largest in the world after China.

In basic training and sometimes in follow-up training, male and female recruits in the Army, Navy and Coast Guard train and share barracks, but have separate personal time and army storage lockers. The Marines and Air Force have separate basic training units and barracks for men and women.

As the oldest branch of the American armed forces, the Army is considered one of the most formidable fighting forces in the world. Specialized units within the Army, such as the Rangers and Special Forces, are used for advanced combat situations.

However the United States Army is not as portable as the Marine Corps. The Marine Corps is the smallest branch of the military. But it nonetheless has a major role because it is usually the first force on the ground in most conflicts. Stationed around the world at all times, Marines are ready to be quickly deployed wherever they are needed at any given moment. The Marines use the Navy for much of their logistical and administrative support.

The U.S. Navy are called upon to handle operations in the ocean, in the air, and on the ground. Elite units like the Navy SEALS are used in advanced combat situations in all three environments.

The Air Force was originally classified as a subdivision of the Army. It wasn't after World War II, in 1947, was the USAF recognized as a separate military branch. Today, it is considered the largest and most technologically advanced air force in the world.

The U.S. Coast Guard operates under the Dept. of Homeland Security during peacetime. In wartime, or by special presidential order, the Coast Guard operates under the Navy. In addition to protecting American waterways, the Coast Guard performs search-and-rescues, law enforcement, and environmental clean-up operations.

U.S.A. Military

All five branches of the military form part of the United States Uniformed Services. This organization is under civilian control with the President serving as Commander-in-chief. The Secretary of Defense, the Department of Defense and Department of the Navy each play a role in the coordination of the armed forces.
