Armed Forces of France
Alternative References: "Armées françaises"
The armed forces of France form the largest military
in Europe with over 250,000 regular personnel and approximately
400,000 reserves. Its military branches consists
of an Army (including marines, the Foreign Legion, and light
aviation), Navy (including naval air), Air Force (including
air defense) and the “Gendarmerie Nationale”,
a heavily armed police force which generally serves as a rural
and all-purpose law enforcement body.
The President of the Republic heads the French armed
forces. Also called the “Chef des armées”
("chief of the armed forces"), the President is
the highest authority controlling the country's military
and nuclear forces. However, the Constitution puts civil and
military forces at the disposal of the government.
France has the third largest nuclear arsenal in the world
with an estimated 480 nuclear weapons, though its been scaled
down significantly since the end of the Cold War. The French
Navy operates about 80% of the total nuclear arsenal.
As a founding member and major player of NATO, France works
actively to help the international organization adapt to the
post-Cold War era. French military forces have also played
a leading role in the ongoing UN peacekeeping missions at
various hotspots in Africa and the Middle East.
Recently, France are in talks to equip Iraq with military
material, including French-made weapons systems, military
wall lockers, and combat aircraft as part of the France
support for Iraq to get back more control from the U.S. armed forces.
Along with upholding its primary objectives, such as national
defense, global stability, and the protection of French interests
abroad, the country maintains a substantial military presence
overseas at its colonies and protectorates. France also provides
military support to several African nations, where it still
exerts military influence and has thousands of troops stationed
across the continent.
Former U.S. Army Chief of Staff Gen. Gordon R. Sullivan once
referred to the French Army as “one of the few remaining
armies in the world capable of conducting a sustained intervention
operation anywhere in the world in support of peace and security.”
“Not only are French soldiers proficient in terms
of techniques, tactics and procedures, you can count them
among the best equipped, dominating every aspect of modern
information and other technologies.”
