Armed Forces of Canada

A small but well-trained military, the Canadian Forces (CF) are the first combined command military force in the modern world. The CF are made up of an army, navy and air force. Although each branch maintains its own command structure within Canada's armed forces, they are unified under one command for administrative reasons.

During the Cold War, Canada was primarily used as a peacekeeping force on missions mandated by the UN. The ability to rely on Canada helped established a positive international reputation.

With the end of the Cold War and the new threats of international terrorism, in 2006 the Canada Command was established - a major overhaul of the military command structure. More emphasis was placed on domestic missions, providing quicker response to disasters and terrorist activity.

The Canada Command places the Canadian Forces as:
  • The point of contact for civilian authorities seeking military support
  • A single military command for domestic and North American operations
  • A focus on Canada as a single theatre of operations

  • The Canadian military consist of the Land Forces Command, Maritime Command, and the Air Command.

Land Forces Command - Canadian Army

The Land Forces Command (LFC) is the descendant of the Canadian Army, the name given to Canada's land forces until 1968. Often referred to as the "militia", the LFC is responsible for all ground operations. Their primary mission is to maintain a combat-ready and multi-purpose ground force to achieve the country's defence objectives.

Canadian soldiers are highly respected around the world for their professionalism, courage and versatility.

Canada's navy is known as the Maritime Command (MARCOM), but still refers to itself unofficially as "the Navy". Naval operations are split between the Atlantic and Pacific commands, with the Atlantic fleet being the larger of the two.

Canada relies heavily on its Navy. MARCOM protects the country's offshore economic resources and patrols the world's longest coast line. It is also able to deploy on short notice to almost anywhere in the world to protect Canada's interests.

The Canadian air force is called the Air Command (AIRCOM), but still refers to itself as the "Air Force". AIRCOM is responsible for all aircraft operations in the CF. Its mandate is to enforce the security of Canada's airspace and provide air support for missions involving the Maritime Command and Land Force Command.

AIRCOM is partnered with the U.S. Air Force in protecting the continental airspace under the NORAD agreement.

As part of Canadian government's pledge to increase military spending, new state-of-the–art military barracks were constructed in New Brunswick and across the country. These barracks provide each soldier with a single room with a double-sized bed, a built-in desk, steel army lockers, as well as a computer jack and a cable connection.
